Bethel, Minn. 40, Gustavus Adolphus 26

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Scott Kirchoff passed for 212 yards and finished with two touchdowns to lead Bethel past Gustavus Adolphus 40-26 Saturday.

Kirchoff became the MIAC's all-time leading passer with 6,128 yards, breaking the previous mark set by St. Thomas graduate Tom Stallings.

The Gusties and Royals were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Bethel scored 18 points in the second to take the lead for good. Bethel, ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division III, remains undefeated at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC.

Sean Smith threw three touchdown passes and finished with 342 yards passing for the Gusties (3-4, 3-3).

Nate Novak, Kurt Bauerly and Nick Teigland all caught touchdown passes from Smith for the Gusties.

Bethel's defense had a big day, with Sam Lacy recovering a fumble and returning it for a touchdown in the first quarter. Jack Schnieder also scored a touchdown on a 39-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.
