Patriots waive veteran FB Centers
MIAMI - The New England Patriots on Sunday waived Larry Centers, the NFL's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards by a running back.
Centers was signed as a free agent in the offseason and had 17 catches for 96 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 69 yards on 15 carries in New England's first six games
The Patriots also placed tackle Adrian Klemm on injured reserve, ending his season, and activated safety Shawn Mayer and defensive tackle Tully Banta-Cain for Sunday's game at Miami.
The 35-year-old Centers has 825 career receptions for 6,787 yards. He spent the last two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and had 43 receptions for 388 yards in 2002.
A 14-year veteran, Centers also has played for the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins. His best season with 1995, when he set an NFL record for a running back with 101 catches for 962 yards and two touchdowns with Arizona.
Klemm started the first three games of the season at right tackle before suffering an ankle injury.
Mayer was signed as a rookie free agent out of Penn State and Banta-Cain was a seventh-round pick of the Patriots.
