CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - A back injury has ended the season for Illinois senior quarterback Jon Beutjer, who started the Fighting Illini's first seven games.
Beutjer will undergo surgery for a herniated disk in the coming weeks, the school announced Tuesday. He did not start last week's game against Michigan.
Beutjer, who transferred from Iowa in 2001, completed 162-of-257 passes for 1,597 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine seasons.
Freshman Chris Pazan made his first career start against the Wolverines and completed 11-of-23 passes for just 100 yards and an interception.
Illinois (1-7) has lost six straight games and is last place in the Big Ten Conference.
