EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants placed guard Rich Seubert on injured reserve and signed offensive lineman Omar Smith to the active roster Tuesday.

Offensive lineman Dion Meredith took Smith's place on the practice squad.

Seubert had surgery Monday to repair fractures to his right tibia, fibula and ankle. He was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday's 14-10 loss to Philadelphia.

Dr. David Helfet inserted a rod in the tibia, put a plate on the fibula and screws in the ankle during the operation.

Seubert is expected to remain hospitalized for two or three days. He will be unable to put any weight on the leg for three months and his rehabilitation is expected to last seven to eight months.

Smith played in seven games for the Giants in 2002, primarily as a blocker on the field goal unit. He was with the team in training camp this year, but was waived Aug. 31. Smith was signed to the practice squad the next day.

Meredith was signed by the Giants as a rookie free agent July 30. He was waived Aug. 25 and signed to the practice squad Sept. 1. Meredith was released from the practice squad last Friday, when the Giants signed center Scott Peters.
