Former LIU star Beenders dies at 87

SOMERVILLE, N.J. -- Henry Beenders, the Dutch-born center on Long Island University's NIT championship team in 1941, has died. He was 87.

Beenders died Saturday at Somerset Medical Center. A cause of death was not immediately available.

Beenders was the captain of the Blackbirds in the 1941-42 season under Hall of Fame coach Clair Bee.

He turned pro after the war and played for the Providence Steam Rollers, the Philadelphia Warriors and the Boston Celtics in the Basketball Association of American League, the forerunner of the NBA.

After finishing his basketball career, he become an international sales representative for a clothing exporting company in New York City for 35 years.

Beenders, who came to the United States when he was 8, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernards Church in Bridgewater.
