Saint Joseph's signs Martinelli to contract extension
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's on Thursday signed men's basketball coach Phil Martinelli and women's basketball coach Cindy Griffin to contract extensions.
Financial terms were not announced, but the deals keep Martinelli under contract through the 2009-10 season and Griffin through 2006-07.
"We are extremely pleased that Phil Martinelli and Cindy Griffin will be guiding the student-athletes in our basketball programs for many seasons to come," Saint Joseph's athletic director Don DiJulia said. "Both Phil and Cindy are terrific representatives of Saint Joseph's."
Now in his ninth season, the outgoing Martinelli has built the Hawks into perennial contenders in the Atlantic 10 Conference, leading them to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two berths in the National Invitation Tournament.
Martinelli has posted a 149-67 record at Saint Joseph's while winning a pair of Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors.
"Saint Joseph's basketball has, is and always will be about passion," Martinelli said. "My promise is to bring my passion to each and every day's task for this special university."
Griffin has recorded a 43-19 record in her first two seasons at Saint Joseph's, leading the Hawks to back-to-back appearances in the Women's NIT. She also spent two years at Loyola in Maryland from 1999-2001 and has a career coaching mark of 91-52.
