PHILADELPHIA -- Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli signed a contract extension Thursday that will keep him with the school through 2010.

Martelli, entering his ninth season as coach of the Hawks, has led Saint Joseph's to three consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season championships and has twice been named conference coach of the year. He has a 149-67 career record.

Martelli, 49, spent 10 years as an assistant at Saint Joseph's before taking over as head coach in 1995.

The Hawks were a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament last season, but were upset in the first round by Auburn 65-63 in overtime.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
