SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Defensive end Andre Carter is expected to miss the San Francisco 49ers' game against St. Louis on Sunday with a bulging disk in his back.

Carter, the 49ers' first-round pick in 2001, leads the team with 3{ sacks this season despite a constantly sore back. He missed practice Thursday because of the injury, and coach Dennis Erickson doesn't expect him to play.

"I think he'll miss this game and the bye (next weekend), and I think he'll be able to go after that, knowing him," Erickson said.

John Engelberger will move from left end to right end, and Chidi Ahanotu will move into the starting lineup.

The 49ers also will be without quarterback Jeff Garcia, who will rest his sprained left ankle.
