UCSB men, women both picked to repeat
IRVINE, Calif. -- The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's basketball teams were both picked to successfully defend their Big West championships Wednesday at the conference's annual media day.
The UCSB men had 78 points in the coaches poll and 271 points in the media poll to beat out Utah State, which had 74 points in the coaches poll and 246 points in the media poll.
UC Irvine was picked to finish third and Cal Poly fourth in both polls. Idaho was picked to finish fifth in the coaches poll and UC Riverside was tabbed for fifth in the media poll.
The UCSB women were a unanimous choice of the 18 voters in the media poll to win their ninth straight conference championship. Nine coaches picked the Gauchos to win another title with one selecting Long Beach State.
Pacific was picked to finish second, Long Beach State third and UC Irvine fourth in both polls. Idaho was picked to finish fifth in the coaches poll and UC Riverside was picked to finish fifth in the media poll.
Varnie Dennis of Cal Poly, Branduinn Fullove of UCSB, Vili Morton and Nate Carter of UC Riverside, Ian Boylan of Cal State Northridge and Adam Parada of UC Irvine were preseason selections for the men's all-conference team.
April McDivitt, Kristen Mann and Lindsay Taylor of UCSB, Gillian d'Hondt of Pacific, Ofa Tulikihihifo of Cal State Northridge and Casandra Reeves of UC Riverside were preseason picks for the women's all-conference team.
