BERLIN, Oct 15 - Soccer news in brief from around the world:

* Borussia Dortmund midfielder Diego has been voted player of the 2006/07 season in a ballot of players from Germany's top three divisions.

The Brazilian got 31.4 percent of the vote, ahead of VfB Stuttgart's Mario Gomez (12.1 percent) and Bayer Leverkusen's Bernd Schneider (10.2 percent), the professional soccer players' association announced.

Striker Miroslav Klose won the honour the previous season with 64 percent of the votes.

* South Africa international striker Thembinkosi Fanteni is to join Maccabi Haifa in Israel in a $1.4 million move from Ajax Cape Town, his South African club said.

Fanteni, who is in South Africa's squad for their international against world champions Italy in Siena on Wednesday, has signed a three-year deal.

He is the second South African to move to the Israeli team in recent months, following the signing of fullback Tsepo Masilela in August. Fanteni will move to Israel in January when the transfer window reopens.

* Sierra Leone have fired coach Jebbor Sherington just two days before they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign, the BBC reported.

Sherington was relieved of his duties after Friday's 2-0 home defeat by Benin in the last of their African Nations Cup qualifiers. The result left them with just one point from six matches in their futile bid to reach the 2008 finals in Ghana.

Sherington was in charge for four of the matches but stepped aside in June when English-based coach Leroy Rosenior took over for two games. Sierra Leone play against Guinea Bissau in Freetown on Wednesday in their World Cup African region preliminary round first-leg tie.
