MULHOUSE, France -- A brief look at the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday:

Stage: An up-and-down 170-kilometer (106-mile) trek from Gerardmer to Mulhouse, featuring a category 1 ascent, Le Markstein.

Winner: Tony Martin, a three-time world champion and specialist in time-trial, got out in a breakaway to become the third German to win a stage on this Tour and took the polka dot jersey given to the Tour's best climber.

Yellow jersey: Tony Gallopin became the first Frenchman to take the Tour's overall lead since 2010.

Quote of the day: "It's true that I felt French solidarity in this break" -- Gallopin on the support from French riders on other teams, as he gained the yellow jersey for Monday's Bastille Day national holiday.

Stat of the day: 1 minute, 34 seconds -- Gallopin's lead over former yellow-jersey bearer Vincenzo Nibali.

Next stage: Monday's 161.5-kilometer (100-mile) trek from Mulhouse to La Planche des Belles Filles features four Category 1 climbs -- one of them a super-steep uphill finish.
