Jeranimo wins Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Jeranimo rallied for an upset win in the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile, and Camp Victory took the Triple Bend Handicap on Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Jeranimo's victory, his third in four starts at Hollywood, earned an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita in November.
Under Garrett Gomez, the 6-year-old ran six furlongs in 1:33.97 for a 1 1/4-lenthgh victory. Jeranimo paid $19.60, $8.40 and $4. Suggestive Boy finished second, a half-length in front of pacesetter Little Mike.
Earlier, Camp Victory ran seven furlongs in 1:22.75 to beat The Factor by 3 1/4 lengths. The win came a day after Camp Victory's trainer Mike Mitchell had surgery to remove a brain tumor.
"There was definitely a little extra emotion there at the wire," jockey Joe Talama said. "Winning for Mike like that is unbelievable."
Mitchell, who notched his 2,596th career victory, watched the race on a laptop computer with his wife and two daughters from the intensive care unit at USC Medical Center.
Camp Victory won for the third time in 10 races. He has earned $517,986.
"There was a tear or two coming down," assistant trainer Phil D'Amato said.
Camp Victory paid $22.60, $7 and $3.60.
The 64-year-old Mitchell has earned more than $62 million in purses. He is the third-leading trainer in Hollywood Park history.
