Archangel wins Yonkers Trot
YONKERS, N.Y. -- Archangel won the $445,592 Yonkers Trot on Saturday night, beating Stormin Normand by 1½ lengths in the first leg of the Trotting Triple Crown.
Archangel, driven by Jim Morrill Jr. and trained by Peter Arrigenna, took advantage when heavily favored Googoo Gaagaa twice went off stride in the race for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Yonkers Raceway.
"Archangel is a pleasure to drive," Morrill said. "We got lucky and it worked out."
Archangel ran the mile in 1:54.1, and paid $11.80 to win.
"Archangel is better from behind," Arrigenna said, "but when he got to the lead, we were OK with it."
Market Share was third.
Googoo Gaagaa, the winner of 11 of his 12 previous starts, finished fifth.
