Sky Kingdom wins Tokyo City Cup at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. -- Sky Kingdom won the $100,000 Tokyo City Cup by 3 3/4 lengths for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Sky Kingdom ran 1½ miles in 2:30.56 and paid $12.20, $6 and $3.80. The son of Empire Maker assumed the lead with a quarter mile to go in the Grade 3 race.
"I let my horse break on his own and just cruised around," Garcia said. "He relaxed perfectly, and when I kicked in he just took off. My plan was to let somebody go to the lead and let my horse sit on the outside and stay comfortable, and that is exactly the way it went."
Oilisblackgold returned $5.40 and $4, while Richard's Kid was another 4 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Sky Kingdom's career earnings to $233,730, with four wins in nine starts. It was his first graded stakes victory.
"He looked great," Baffert said. "He really stepped it up but he was training really well."
Argentine-bred Calidoscopio, making his first start since winning the Breeders' Cup Marathon on Nov. 2, finished fifth as the 5-2 favorite.
