Shea Shea sets course record to win Al Quoz Sprint
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Favorite Shea Shea won the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint in course-record time Saturday, edging out Joy and Fun and Eagle Regiment.
The win was the second of the day for South African trainer Mike de Kock and jockey Christophe Soumillon. De Kock claimed victory in the Godolphin Mile with Soft Falling Rain, and Soumillon won on Al Mamun Monlau in the Dubai Kahayla Classic.
Ganas took the early lead before being overtaken by the American-bred Varsity at the halfway point. Several horses vied for the lead going down the stretch, with Shea Shea beating Joy and Fun by three-quarters of a length and timing 56.41 seconds to shave 0.61 off the course record.
The Al Quoz Sprint is one of nine races at the $27.2 million Dubai World Cup.
