Take Charge Indy hurt at Monmouth
OCEANPORT, N.J. -- Heavy favorite Take Charge Indy broke stride in the backstretch of the $200,000 Grade II Monmouth Cup Sunday afternoon, breaking his left front foot.
The injury will require surgery to fix. Take Charge Indy was the 3/5 favorite with Gary Stevens aboard and seemed to be putting the race away when the horse took a bad step in the back stretch with a three-length lead, forcing Stevens to ease him.
"I heard a loud pop around the half-mile pole," said Stevens, the Hall of Fame jockey. "He wanted to continue, but I pulled him up."
The winner was former Kentucky Derby entrant Pants on Fire, with Paco Lopez riding.
