Gabriel Charles, Ethnic Dance win Del Mar Derby
DEL MAR, Calif. -- Gabriel Charles and Ethnic Dance won divisions of the $250,000 Del Mar Derby for 3-year-olds on Sunday.
Gabriel Charles came from off the pace to win the first division of the nine-furlong race on the turf as the 9-5 favorite under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. He won by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:46.94 and paid $5.80, $3.60 and $3.
Gervinho returned $6.20 and $4.20, while Redwood Kitten was another head back in third and paid $6.40 to show.
Gabriel Charles earned $150,000 for his third win in seven career starts.
Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Ethnic Dance led all the way to win the second division of the Grade 2 race that was run in divisions for the first time since 1970. He won by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:48.24.
Ethnic Dance paid $13.80, $7.20 and $5 for trainer John Sadler and co-owner Jenny Craig, the diet maven. He has three wins in seven starts and earnings of $249,850.
Infinite Magic returned $7.40 and $4.20, while Den's Legacy paid $4.60 to show. Dice Flavor, the 9-2 favorite, was 10th and last.
In the $100,000 Torrey Pines Stakes, Beholder won by 2 3/4 lengths under Gary Stevens. She ran a mile on the synthetic surface in 1:36.30 in her first start since losing the Kentucky Oaks by a half-length on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
Last year's champion 2-year-old filly, Beholder paid $2.20, $2.10 and $2.10 with her sixth win in 10 career starts. She increased her earnings to $1,825,000 with first-place money of $100,000.
Wittgenstein returned $6.80 and $3.80, while Charlie Em paid $2.60 to show.
In the $95,440 Adoration Stakes for older fillies and mares, Charm the Maker won by a half-length under Joe Talamo. She ran a mile on the synthetic surface in 1:35.47 and paid $14.20 to show.
Trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally and owned by his wife, Debbie, Charm the Maker won for the first time since 2011. She earned $56,640.
Hard to Resist was second and Via Villaggio finished third.
