Strong Mandate wins Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Strong Mandate, ridden by Jose Ortiz, moved to the lead at mid-stretch and drew away to an eight-length victory in the $300,000 Hopeful Stakes for two-year-olds Monday at Saratoga Race Course.
Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who celebrated his 78th birthday with the victory worth $180,000 to owners Robert Baker and William Mack, Strong Mandate ran seven furlongs over a muddy track in 1:23.55 and paid $18.60, $9.50 and $8.40. Runner-up Casiquapo paid $25.40 and $10.40. Lunarwarfare, third of 10, paid $5.40 to show.
The Labor Day card concluded the 150th season of racing at Saratoga.
