Orza promoted to chief operating officer of players' association

NEW YORK -- Gene Orza was promoted to chief operating officer of the Major League Baseball Players Association by union head Donald Fehr.

Orza, the union's No. 2 official, had been associate general counsel. He joined the players' association in June 1984.

Michael Weiner, the union's No. 3 official, was promoted to general counsel, a title that had been held by Fehr, who remains the union's executive director.

Jeff Fannell was promoted from counsel to assistant general counsel and Evie Goldstein from licensing counsel to assistant general counsel, licensing, under the changes announced Wednesday.

Martha Child, Fehr's longtime assistant, was promoted to managing officer and her expanded duties will include institutional finances.

Chris Dahl, who had been Web site editor, becomes communications coordinator.
