SAN DIEGO -- Glenn Hoffman, the older brother of free agent closer Trevor Hoffman, was hired as third base coach of the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

The Padres also promoted Tye Waller to first base coach and Paul Navarro to assistant trainer.

Hoffman replaces Rob Picciolo and Waller replaces Davey Lopes. Picciolo and Lopes were fired on Oct. 14.

Glenn Hoffman joins the Padres as they negotiate with his younger brother. Trevor Hoffman filed for free agency last week and is seeking between $25-27 million over three years, while the Padres' opening offer was for $10 million over two years.

Trevor Hoffman is second on the career saves list with 436, with all but two coming with the Padres.

Glenn Hoffman spent the last six seasons as third base coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers. A former big league shortstop with the Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels, he began his coaching career in 1991 as manager at Rookie League Great Falls. He managed the Dodgers for part of the 1998 season, leading them to a 47-41 record.

Waller spent the last six seasons as the Padres' director of player development. He has been a member of the organization for the past 18 seasons as a coach, instructor and administrator. He was the Padres' bullpen coach in 1995.

Navarro completed his second season at Single-A Fort Wayne before joining the Padres' training staff late in the season.
