Bonds again tries for 714th home run vs. Cubs
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds knows it's just a matter of time before he moves along side the "Bambino" on baseball's all-time home list.
After going 1-for-4 with a walk Tuesday, Bonds again tries to match Hall of Famer Babe Ruth with his 714th home run Wednesday when the San Francisco Giants host the Chicago Cubs.
The 40-year-old Bonds was inches away from tying Ruth in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 6-1 victory over the Cubs, before Juan Pierre made a leaping grab at the center field wall.
Jason Schmidt allowed one run and five hits in his second straight complete game victory and took over the San Francisco record for career winning percentage (70.0), surpassing Hall of Famer Juan Marichal.
Matt Cain (1-4, 6.27 ERA) hopes to rediscover the magic that sparked him to a two-hit shutout against the Cubs in his first major league win September 9. In his last outing, he gave up six runs and nine hits in just four innings of Friday's loss to the New York Mets.
The Cubs give the ball to Carlos Zambrano (0-2, 4.43) who makes his eighth start of the campaign. Despite striking out 10 and yielding four hits in seven scoreless innings, he did not get a decision Friday against the San Diego Padres.
The Cubs have lost eight straight games overall and seven in a row on the same road trip for the first time September 13-20, 2000.
