Glaus starts at shortstop for the first time in major league career
TORONTO - Troy Glaus made a surprise start at shortstop on Friday night - a first in his major league career.
Toronto manager John Gibbons wanted more offense against Chicago White Sox starter Freddy Garcia, and he didn't think his third baseman would see many ground balls with fly ball pitcher Ted Lilly starting for Toronto.
Gibbons said the move is just for one game.
"Don't get used to it," Gibbons said. "And if something goes wrong don't get used to me."
The injury-prone Glaus was OK with it.
"I will do anything it takes to help our team win. If it means playing short or third it doesn't matter to me," Glaus said.
Glaus said he played some shortstop late in games because of double switches, but never started there.
"I did play it the first 16 years of my baseball life," the 6-foot-5 Glaus said.
Ozzie Guillen, Chicago's manager and a former shortstop, said the days of short shortstops are over because of Cal Ripken Jr. and Alex Rodriguez.
"In the past they had a bunch of midgets playing there like myself," the 5-11 Guillen said. "The shortstops coming to the big leagues now are pretty tall. It's about range. It's about catching the ball and making the routine plays."
General manager J.P. Ricciardi said he was OK with the move for one game.
The Blue Jays optioned the previous starting shortstop, Russ Adams, to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.
Shea Hillenbrand started at third against Chicago.
Ricciardi declined to comment about a reported deal that would send Hillenbrand to the Los Angeles Angels for second baseman Adam Kennedy.
The Blue Jays plan on moving second baseman Aaron Hill to shortstop and have Adams play second in the minors. Utility infielder John McDonald and recent call up Luis Figueroa will also see time at shortstop.
