Highlights Monday at baseball's GM meetings
NAPLES, Fla. -- Highlights of the general managers' meetings on Monday:<
-- Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball planned to announce Tuesday night at 8 p.m. EST (Wednesday at 10 a.m. Tokyo time) whether the Seibu Lions accepted the high bid for pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. If the bid is accepted, Major League Baseball would reveal the team that made the offer, which would have 30 days to negotiate a contract with Matsuzaka's agent, Scott Boras.
-- Colorado agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract with second baseman Kaz Matsui.
-- Matsui's replacement on the Mets, Jose Valentin, reached a preliminary agreement with New York on a one-year deal worth about $3 million.
-- General managers met with their counterparts and with agents for players.
-- The formal agenda, which includes discussions about eliminating ties, instant replay and rules for storage of baseballs, starts Tuesday.
