KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The Kansas City Royals on Friday signed veteran infielder Alex Gonzalez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Gonzalez, 33, played just 20 games for Philadelphia last season, batting .111 with one RBIs. He went on the retired list May 21 and was reinstated November 1 before becoming a free agent five days later.

A 13-year veteran, Gonzalez has some pop in his bat. He has batted .243 with 274 doubles, 137 homers and 536 RBIs in 1,396 games with Toronto, the Chicago Cubs, Montreal, San Diego, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.

In 2003, Gonzalez had career highs of 20 homers and 37 doubles for the Cubs, helping them win the National League Central Division.
