Werth placed on 15-day DL; Coste recalled
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies purchased the contract of left-hander J.C. Romero between games of Friday's day-night doubleheader against the Mets.
Romero, signed to a minor-league deal last week, was 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA in 23 games for the Boston Red Sox this season. He walked 15 batters in 20 innings and struck out 11. Opponents batted .308 against him.
Right-hander Clay Condrey, the winning pitcher in Thursday night's 8-7 win over Cincinnati, was designated for assignment to make room for Romero.
The 31-year-old Romero was working out with Class-A Clearwater because he hasn't pitched since June 8. Romero is 27-22 with a 4.54 ERA over nine seasons pitching primarily in relief.
