PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh outfielder Gary Varsho was hired Tuesday as new Pirates manager John Russell's bench coach.

Also chosen for Russell's staff were third base coach Tony Beasley and bullpen coach Luis Dorante.

Varsho, a backup outfielder on the Pirates' 1991 and 1992 division-winning teams, was the Indians' outfield and base running coordinator last season after spending five seasons as the Phillies' bench coach. Varsho also managed in the minors for five seasons.

Russell was the Phillies' Triple-A manager the last two seasons after being the Pirates' third base coach from 2002-05.

Beasley, a one-time Pirates farmhand, has been with Pittsburgh for 15 seasons as a minor league player, coach and manager. He also was the Washington Nationals' third base coach in 2006.

Dorante, a minor league manager for 11 years, managed the last two seasons in the Marlins' farm system after being Florida's bullpen coach in 2005. He managed or coached in the Expos' minor league system for seven years.

Last season, Jim Lett was the Pirates' bench coach, Jeff Cox was the third base coach and Bobby Cuellar was the bullpen coach under former manager Jim Tracy.
