Mets call up LHP Hampson, designate OF Rottino

CHICAGO -- The New York Mets selected the contract of left-handed reliever Justin Hampson from Triple-A Buffalo after Sunday night's 6-5 loss to the New York Yankees and designated outfielder Vinny Rottino for assignment.

Hampson was 4-2 with two saves and a 2.13 ERA with Buffalo. The 32-year-old last pitched in a big league game on Sept. 28, 2008 with the San Diego Padres.

Manager Terry Collins said the move will add depth to the bullpen by allowing southpaw Tim Byrdak to be saved for "key situations."

Rottino was hitting .182 with two homers and 5 RBI in 33 at-bats for the Mets.

Hampson joined the team and will be available for Monday night's series opener against the Chicago Cubs.
