PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free-agent outfielder Roger Bernadina.

Bernadina batted .178 with two home runs and six RBIs in 85 games with the Washington Nationals this year. Last season, Bernadina, a left-handed batter, hit .291 with a .372 on-base percentage in 129 games for Washington.

The Phillies optioned Michael Martinez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make room for Bernadina on the 25-man roster.
