Brewster cuts ties with Mason assistants
MINNEAPOLIS -- Newly hired Minnesota coach Tim Brewster has decided not to retain the bulk of predecessor Glen Mason's coaching staff.
Offensive coordinator Mitch Browning, defensive coordinator David Lockwood, running backs coach Vic Adamle, defensive line coach Carey Bailey and quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen were all told on Thursday that they will not be brought back under the new coaching staff.
Browning and Adamle were with Mason from the beginning at Minnesota, spending all 10 seasons here. Lockwood was in his fifth season on the Gophers staff, while Petersen spent eight years with the Gophers and Bailey two.
Brewster also was scheduled to meet with longtime assistant Gordy Shaw and Luke Tressel on Thursday, the two coaches athletics director Joel Maturi tabbed to stay in touch with recruits and smooth the transition while he searched for a new head coach.
Brewster was hired Monday night and said at his introductory press conference on Wednesday that he will move quickly to assemble his staff.
Players said the new coach already had several key candidates in mind already, but Brewster declined comment before he met with Mason's staff.
"My cell phone has been on fire," Brewster said.
