Panel OKs raising LSU ticket prices
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The LSU Board of Supervisors should have had considerably more notice about a proposal to increase the price of football tickets and parking passes, Chairman Rod West says.
"I'm going to support this. But I'm going to tell you I feel like we're rubber-stamping this today," Rod West of New Orleans said when the proposal came before the board's Athletic Committee on Thursday.
Only Louis Lambert of Prairieville voted against the proposal, which the full board was expected to approve Friday.
Lambert said he supports the athletics department but worries that, nationwide, college fans must pay more every year. "This affects a lot of people from all walks of life and all salary levels," he said after the meeting Thursday night.
The committee made only one change from the plan announced last week: most of the increase for premium motor home parking was made taxable, rather than 80 percent tax deductible.
West did not criticize anyone by name, but said the plan seemed to be a last-minute affair, and board members should have had a part in it.
Board member Alvin Kimble of Baton Rouge said he learned about the proposal from the news.
Committee chair Marty Chabert apologized for not notifying the board sooner, saying he was ill.
Athletics Director Skip Bertman said the ticket plan could not be completed until after the Sugar Bowl, because he did not have all the necessary budget figures until then.
The new plan has ticket prices increasing this year to $45 for LSU's four Southeastern Conference home games and the Virginia Tech game, which are designated as "premier games." Tickets will cost $40 each for LSU's two other nonconference home games.
Last year, LSU charged $36 for seven of its eight home games and $45 for one "premier game" against Alabama.
The base price of season tickets will increase from $297 for eight home games last season to $305 for seven home games this year. With an eighth home game in 2008, the total cost will be $340.
