DULUTH, Minn. -- University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball coach Sue Fiero on Wednesday announced her resignation, effective June 30.

Fiero said she is marrying former Minnesota Duluth graduate assistant football coach Brad Newton in August and he has accepted a job in the Twin Cities.

"We made the decision together to relocate," she said. "It was a tough and difficult decision for me considering all of the wonderful relationships I have made during my nine years at UMD."

Fiero, 28, took over as the Bulldogs' head coach last July and directed the team to a 16-12 overall record and a 3-9 mark in the North Central Conference in 2005-06. Fiero served as assistant coach the previous three seasons.

The university said it would begin looking for a new head coach immediately.
