Giants' Tyree charged with marijuana possession
Tyree, 24, and two other men were in the car when Fort Lee Patrolman Cory Horton stopped it for speeding around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Tyree was arrested after Horton learned he was wanted on a traffic warrant from Blairstown, and the officer then smelled what he believed to be marijuana.
After questioning Tyree's two passengers, Al-Girard Taylor, 19, of Newark, and Justin Madera, 20, of Jersey City, they turned over the marijuana, authorities said. All three men were then charged with drug possession and taken to the Bergen County Jail.
Tyree, a former Syracuse University star, was taken in the sixth round of last year's NFL draft and made the Giants as a special teams player.
Tyree spent Tuesday night in the Bergen County Jail, Sgt. Leonard Cottrell of the Fort Lee Police said Thursday. He was released Wednesday night after posting $2,500 bail, according to jail records.
No court date has been set, Cottrell said.
Tyree, of Montclair, was not listed in directory information. A Giants spokesman, Pat Hanlon, declined to comment on the arrest.
