ST. LOUIS -- New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel left in the first quarter of Sunday's game with an apparent right shoulder injury, further depleting his team's secondary.

Samuel made his second career start, playing in place of injured Ty Law. He was hurt at the end of a 3-yard reception by Rams tight end Brandon Manumaleuna midway through the period and sat on the bench with his shoulder pads off after being checked by team doctors.

The Patriots' other starting cornerback, Tyrone Poole, also is out with a knee injury.
