PHILADELPHIA - The Washington Redskins have taken a major hit.

Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis suffered a broken right hand during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Portis rushed for 25 yards on six carries before leaving. He will not return.

Veteran Ladell Betts will get the bulk of the carries in Portis' absence.

It is the second injury Portis will have to deal with this season. He suffered a dislocated left shoulder during the preseason, returned for the opener and then missed a game.

Portis has rushed for 523 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games this season.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Portis rushed for a franchise-record 1,516 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
