SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver David Gettis twisted his left knee during Wednesday night's practice, but the extent of the injury was not known.

Gettis, who had 37 receptions and three touchdowns last season in 15 starts as a rookie, was carted off the field following practice. He was careful not to put any weight on his left leg as he eased into the golf cart.

"He tweaked it and they're going to check it out," coach Ron Rivera said after practice. "That's all I really know. I went over and talked to him and he said, 'It buckled on me a little bit, Coach.' They (the trainers) iced him down and said they would check him out after practice."

Meanwhile, rookie receiver Kealoha Pilares and veteran Legedu Naanee had terrific practices filling in, with both making several nice catches.

The Panthers also got a good report on outside linebacker Thomas Davis, who was feeling pain in his foot the day before.

"They went in and took a look at it and they're going to check his shoes and give him some new (inserts) and hopefully that will take the pressure off his foot," Rivera said.

Along with Davis, the other starters sitting out Wednesday night's practice were linebacker Jon Beason (Achilles'), cornerback Captain Munnerlyn (calf), defensive end Greg Hardy (body abrasions), wide receiver Steve Smith (finger) and guard Geoff Schwartz.

Cornerback Chris Gamble returned to practice for the first time since coming down with a stomach illness and had an interception on rookie quarterback Cam Newton.
