Kowalski wins McCann award from PFWA

Tom Kowalski has posthumously won the 2012 Dick McCann Award for his contributions to pro football though his coverage of the Detroit Lions for 32 years.

The Professional Football Writers of America gave the award to the former Detroit Lions beat writer who died in August at age 51. He covered the Lions in parts of five decades, beginning at the Oakland Press in 1978 before moving to the Booth Newspapers chain and its website, MLive.com.

The award is named for the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who also was a reporter in New York and Washington before becoming the Redskins' publicist and later, the team's general manager.

Kowalski will be honored in Canton, Ohio, during the weekend of the Hall's enshrinement festivities.

The PFWA announced the honor on Friday.
