NEW YORK -- Comments on the Carolina Panthers by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):

---

CAROLINA PANTHERS (22)

Chris Berman (ESPN, 27) -- Strong effort at Atlanta a sign of better things to come.

Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 20) -- Porous defense is a bigger problem than Cam Newton's attitude.

Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 27) -- Comment currently unavailable

Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 21) -- Painful loss at Atlanta, but they are getting better.

Bob Glauber (Newsday, 19) -- Cam comes close, but can't put away the Falcons. His costly fumble down the stretch opens the door for Atlanta's comeback win.

Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 17) -- Who rushes for more yards this season -- Cam Newton or Robert Griffin III? Right now it's Griffin.

Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 22) -- Good Cam, bad Cam. All I know is that nobody makes enough plays for this team to take a giant step forward.

Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 24) -- Cam Newton is averaging 9.47 yards per pass attempt, tops in the league.

Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 23) -- I probably have the Panthers too low right now and as Cam Newton grows this team will fly up this board.

John Lynch (Fox Sports, 21) -- Despite a tough loss to the Falcons, the Panthers showed why so many people were excited about this team entering the 2012 season.

Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 22) -- Problems with the secondary and run defense are preventing the Panthers from becoming a legitimate playoff-contender.

Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 25) -- They can make a great statement if they can bounce back from their crushing loss to the Falcons.
