NEW YORK -- Comments on the Carolina Panthers by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):

Chris Berman (ESPN, 27) -- To be candid, Cam and company need to improve.

Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 21) -- Cam Newton needed this bye week. But coach Ron Rivera better fix his porous defense.

Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 29)

Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 27) -- Cam in middle of a sophomore slump.

Bob Glauber (Newsday, 26) -- Ron Rivera says Cam Newton is trying to do too much. Or is it ore like Newton just isn't doing enough?

Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 28) -- The Panthers need more from QB Cam Newton than four touchdowns passing and two rushing. His negatives -- five interceptions and two fumbles -- offset his few positives.

Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 26) -- What we're witnessing is Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, and it's pulling one ballclub down.

Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 26) -- Without Cam Newton, this running attack would be averaging only 90 yards per game.

Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 26) -- I thought 2012 was too early to anoint the Panthers. There are growing pains for every team and Cam Newton is experiencing his right now.

John Lynch (Fox Sports, 26) -- The Panthers are just not consistent enough right now starting with their QB Cam Newton.

Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 23) -- Cam Newton is a deserving scapegoat for a 1-4 record, but the problems run deeper. Tennessee (74.6) and Oakland (71.5) are the only other teams allowing opponents to complete a higher percentage of passes than Carolina (68.0).

Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 28) -- Cam Newton's second year tumble is almost as stunning as his first year success.
