DAVIE, Fla. -- Receiver Marvin McNutt, who caught a winning 56-yard touchdown pass in the Miami Dolphins' final exhibition game, was among 22 players released by the team to reach the 53-man roster limit Saturday.

Third-string quarterback Pat Devlin made the team for the third year in a row, even though he has yet to play in an NFL game. Devlin played most of the final exhibition game and threw the scoring pass to McNutt.

Among those waived was fourth-year linebacker Austin Spitler and defensive tackle Kheeston Randall, who played in 12 games as a rookie last season.

Miami kept only four wide receivers who took part in training camp, including backup Rishard Matthews. Marcus Thigpen made the team as a kick returner for the second year in a row.

Also surviving the cuts was tight end Michael Egnew, a third-round pick in 2012 who played in only two games as a rookie. All nine 2013 draft picks remain on the roster, including running back Mike Gillislee of Florida, a fifth-round choice.

Further moves this weekend by the Dolphins are possible as they scan the list of players released by other teams. They open the season Sept. 8 at Cleveland.
