ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild named defenseman Willie Mitchell their captain for December.

Mitchell, second on the team in average ice time with more than 20 minutes per game, has a plus-4 rating which is the best among Minnesota blue-liners who have appeared in more than 10 games. The five-year veteran, who joined the Wild in the 2001-02 season, has played in 266 career NHL games. This is his first stint as captain for Minnesota, which has rotated the honor each month since the franchise's inception.

Left wing Brian Rolston and center Wes Walz were named alternate captains for the season.
