Anaheim Ducks re-sign D Smaby, ink Rakell
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Defenseman Matt Smaby has signed a one-year deal to return to the Anaheim Ducks.
The Ducks announced the deal Monday. Anaheim also signed right wing Richard Rakell to a three-year deal.
Smaby played 30 games for the Ducks' AHL affiliate in Syracuse last season after a serious thumb injury sidelined him for three months, preventing him from competing for an NHL job.
Smaby played 32 games during the 2010-11 season for Tampa Bay. He has bounced between the AHL and the NHL for the past five seasons.
Rakell spent the past two seasons playing junior hockey in Ontario after arriving from his native Sweden. He was the 30th overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Ducks.
