MOSCOW -- The head of Sochi's Olympic organizing committee says authorities will do everything to make the 2014 Winter Games the "safest in history."

Dmitry Chernyshenko said Wednesday that the security plan for Sochi meets international demands. He said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies that the system's efficiency has been proven at test competitions and will be tested at other events.

While Chernyshenko didn't mention the Boston Marathon blasts that killed three people and wounded more than 170 Monday, several other Russian officials pledged to beef up Sochi security after the bombings.

Sochi is in southern Russia, a region that has been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread after two separatist wars in Chechnya.
