Mexico opens World Cup qualifying with 3-1 win
Mexico opened World Cup qualifying with a 3-1 win over Guyana on Friday night, getting goals from Carlos Salcido and Giovani dos Santos during a five-minute span early in the first half.
Salcido put El Tri in front in the 11th minute at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, and dos Santos doubled the lead in the 15th with his 14th goal in 58 international appearances.
An own goal by John Rodrigues gave Mexico a three-goal lead in the 51st, but Mexico's Hector had an own-goal nine minutes later.
In the other Group B match in North and Central America and the Caribbean's semifinal round, El Salvador rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie at Costa Rica. The hosts went ahead as Alvaro Saborio scored in the 10th minute and Joel Campbell in the 15th, but El Salvador came back as Isidro Gutierrez scored in the 23rd minute and Osael Romero in the 54th.
In Group C, Olivier Occean scored on a header off a cross from David Edgar in the 55th minute to give Canada a 1-0 win over Cuba at Havana. The Canadians played a man short after goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld was given a red card in the 64th minute for handling the ball outside his penalty area.
In the other Group C match, Panama won 2-0 at Honduras on goals by Blas Perez in the 64th and 80th minutes.
The United States beat Antigua and Barbuda 3-1 in Group A as Carlos Bocanegra scored in the eighth minute, Clint Dempsey converted a penalty kick in the 44th and Herculez Gomez added a goal in the 72nd. Peter Byers scored in the 65th for the visitors.
Jamaica beat visiting Guatemala 2-1 in the group's other game, with goals by Demar Phillips in the 40th and Ryan Johnson in the 46th building a lead for the Reggae Boyz. Dwight Pezzarossi scored in the second minute of second-half injury time for Guatemala.
The top two teams in each CONCACAF group advance to next year's regional finals, which will produce three qualifiers for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
In Asia, Keisuke Honda scored a hat trick as Japan routed Jordan 6-0, and Australia stumbled to a 0-0 draw against Oman. South Korea routed 2022 World Cup host Qatar 4-1, and Lebanon and Uzbekistan drew 1-1.
