We preview the evening for you, sure, but anyone can do that. For a magazine with "NEXT" as its mission, we thought we should try something different. So here goes: Tonight, we preview the action … while wrapping it in popular culture.
The Must: Lakers vs. Suns (9pm, ESPN)
The Correlation: "Everything Falls Apart" by Dog's Eye View
An oldie but a goodie off the Happy Nowhere CD, "Everything Falls Apart" begins quite simply: "Don't look now; things just got worse." You hear that, Mike D'Antoni? Your offense, which runs to the tune of 110 per night (amazing, if you think about it), is about to insert a dude in clown shoes into an offense full of Tyson Gays. Sure, Shaq can bang with Duncan and (ha!) Dampier come playoff time, but what of the rest of the Suns?
The song also contains the lyric, "Another quick and new sure shot romance," which summarizes the Shaq and Kobe dynamic since Showtime II ended. Shaq fell back in love (with Flash), and now his heart belongs to The Flop Haired One. Kobe fell in love with Lamar, then out of love with Andrew (and Mitch Kupchak, and Phil Jackson...), but now he's back in a committed dynamic with Pau and the whole Laker organization. It's great when love blooms out west.
Also, tonight after the game, Steve Nash will launch, "The Drive Home," a live online video blog on LiveVideo.com. Fans will be able to login and ask Nash questions on a live video blog while he drives home from the arena.
The Should: Kansas State vs. Nebraska (9pm, ESPN2)
The Correlation: Indiana Jones
How hot is this new trailer? If you need a hero for modern times, look no further than Michael Beasley. The frosh is putting up numbers comparable to Durant last season, and the last time his Wildcats locked it up with the Huskers, he went for 35 and 13. Good chance he goes for either 40 (swish) or 20 (clank) here, so swing by.
The Time Passer: A Kid with Long-Range Skills
Take a peek. We love the triumph of youth. And cynicism (in the comments).
The Reason The Internet Is Cool 2.20: Overzealous Copy and Basketball Prodigies
Again, a child with skills and then some. Very impressive. Perhaps more impressive? (Or less, dependent on your distinction) The extremely involved reporter voice-over. Was this a class project?
Other Stuff to Mention in a Boring, Conventional Way:
Dallas vs. New Orleans (8 ET, NBALP)
Boston vs. Golden State (10:30 ET, NBALP)
Atlanta vs. Sacramento (Bibby)
NC vs. NC State (7 ET, ESPN)
Wisconsin vs. Illinois (9 ET, BTN)
