Focus, Kevin. It could be a late May preview tonight.
Nine Top 25 teams take to 94 feet of hell in college hoops tonight, and with Selection Sunday about a week and a half away, you'd assume that's the main story. You'd be wrong (at least partially). All eyes will be on Boston tonight, as the Pistons arrive to match the Celtics (7:30pm) in a potential Eastern Finals preview.
It should be a battle, with Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace serving, as always, as the emotional catalysts for their squad. And hey, if you're interested in what Rajon Rando eats on the road, check out LZ's Café! Or, to get a sense of how close the Pistons really are, you could take a gander at Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billups appearing on an episode of the old ESPN "Teammates" show.
In academia, Florida, the two-time defending champion, is holding onto its bubble life, and a nice win over No. 4 Tennessee (9pm, ESPN Full Court) at home would logically help them. If you know nothing about Florida this year, well, we don't blame you. Check out Erin Andrews' recent interview with Billy Donovan for a little more info on the squad.
Newly minted No. 25 Mississippi State battles No. 16 Vanderbilt (8pm). Ya know about Vanderbilt and how Shan Foster made Bruce Pearl sweat a new kind of orange. MSU is lesser known, but this play is about as nasty as you'll see . And Ben Hansbrough, Pyscho T's little brother, plays for 'em too .
On the diamond (baseball's back!), St. Louis takes on Florida tonight (7:05pm). If you happen to be down in Florida, check it out live; a scout once told Jayson Stark that Hanley Ramirez is the second-best player in baseball behind A-Rod .
In UEFA Champions League Soccer, Roma battles Real Madrid (they turn 106 tomorrow!) (9 pm ET) With players like Robihno and Totti, you're bound for some fireworks. We won't spoil it for you, but the game is already over and we know who won. Let's just say it's worth watching.
March 5, sadly, is the 26th anniversary of John Belushi's passing. As one of the greatest comedic minds of his time, he gave us so much . Paul Konerko, who hit one of the most beautiful grand slams in one of the worst World Series' ever, is 32. And Fred Williamson, one of the NFL's first self-promoters (he called himself "The Hammer") who then began hawking Malt Liquor , is 70.
We'll leave you with this: video of a 1978 Atari football game , billed as the first with a scrolling playfield. Society's come a long way. Or, maybe it hasn't; the Pistons are probably still gonna make the Conference Finals.
