"Oh, I'm coming to town. Right up in yo' grill!"
We like fun, and appreciate facts, so we've been running irreverent, pithy notes about various big events the last few months. The second round of the NHL playoffs continue tonight, so here we go with Rangers vs. Penguins. Seriously, is there anything cooler than the notion of Sidney Crosby going top shelf after schooling Sean Avery? Doubtful.
(1) Henrik Lundqvist learned to play goalie in part thanks to his kindergarten teachers freezing over a 9 meter by 3 meter sandpit to create an ice rink in winter.
(2) Evgeni Malkin's hometown, Magnitogorsk in Russia, has been voted one of the 25 most polluted cities in the world. Sheesh.
(3) Chris Drury graduated from Fairfield Prep in CT in 1994; in 1996, "Mac guy" and current Drew Barrymore boyfriend Justin Long graduated from the same school. They must have known each other! Awesome.
(4) Gary Roberts is building quite a fan base in Pittsburgh. There's a variant of the Chuck Norris facts applied directly to Roberts, and the term "WWGRD?" ("What would Gary Roberts do?") has been showcased on wristbands.
(5) Jaromir Jagr's hero growing up was Ronald Reagan because the "peace through strength" policy contributed to the fall of European communism. Jagr actually kept a picture of Reagan in his academic notebook during his upbringing in the Czech Republic; discovery of it would have likely led to some form of punishment.
(6) The reason the penguin on the Penguins logo skates in front of a triangle is because of "The Golden Triangle," a nickname for a section of downtown Pittsburgh which headquarters the H.J. Heinz building, among others.
(7) J. Fred Coots is the author of the official Rangers Victory Song (written in 1940 in tribute to their Stanley Cup title of that season). Know what else he wrote? "Doin the Racoon." OK, there's a better example. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." Yep. How awesome is that? Go Rangers.
