What's next for the Mavericks and the Suns?
GREENY Both the Suns and the Mavericks made deals meant to win them a title this year, but when those types of moves don't work, you set your franchise back a long way. Who is taking Jason Kidd and the rest of his contract off Dallas' hands now? Who's taking Shaq and the rest of his contract from the Suns? It's not going to happen. Those teams may decide it's time to start over, but it's not going to be so easy.
GOLIC I'm more interested to see what system the new coaches of those teams implement next season. Both Dallas and Phoenix are offensively oriented teams that are fun to watch, but neither plays defense. If management can't change the roster, will it instead change the system?
GREENY Even so, both teams have to decide which player they're going to build around. In Phoenix, that decision is easy: They have Amaré Stoudemire, and Steve Nash is effective enough at his age to be the second-best player on a great team. It's just a matter of figuring out Shaq's role and making the necessary changes. In Dallas, they have to ask themselves a hard question: Is Dirk Nowitzki still someone around whom you can build a championship-caliber team? At this point, I'm not sure the answer is yes. And if Dallas shares my opinion, then they're really starting from scratch.
GOLIC At least Nowitzki is a guy you can move. He's not Kidd or Shaq. Dallas actually could rebuild by trading Dirk, since he's a player teams will want.
GREENY But Mark Cuban loves Nowitzki, which is why that's going to be the most interesting off-season situation to watch. How will Cuban, who we know loves to win, approach the restructuring of his team? If nothing else, you know it's going to be entertaining.
Will we ever see a college football playoff?
GREENY I may be the lone holdout who likes the current system. A college professor once told me the only interesting questions are the ones with no answers. Every other sport wraps things up, but debates about which team was best continue long after a college football season is over. Auburn went undefeated in 2004—can you say they weren't the best team in the country? We'll be discussing it for years to come.
GOLIC Not having a playoff is ridiculous. You're seeing it as a fan, but I speak as a player: It should be settled on the field. The NCAA says it's worried about academics, but D2 and D3 manage to have playoffs. It's about money, not what's good for the game.
Predictions Sure To Be Wrong
GREENY Jason Taylor will not play for the Dolphins in 2008.
GOLIC Jason Taylor will not play for the Dolphins in 2008… but he will have the Dancing With the Stars trophy on his mantel.
