WHEN IT COMES TO BROTHERS IN SPORTS, WE'RE GOING WITH THE MANNINGS
[Ed's note: Not sure what All-World Power Rankings is? Please click here.]
Today is Jordan Staal's birthday. Got us thinking: how underrated are the Staal brothers? Jordan is on a Penguins team which will probably win a Cup in the next few years; Eric already has a Cup with the Hurricanes; Marc is a two-time gold medalist in the World Junior Championships (for Canada) and Jared might have Gretzky as his coach someday. Given that our current issue has an in-depth feature on the Mannings, we thought it'd be a good time to rank brother combos in sport. Lo and behold, we're starting with the QBs.
| TOP 5 | |||
| RANK (YESTERDAY) | WHAT | WHY | |
![]() |
1 (14) | PEYTON AND ELI MANNING | They've won the last two Super Bowls. That's fairly incredible for one family. It's like a father and son both being Presi— |
![]() |
2 (410) | BRUCE AND CLAY MATTHEWS | Both played 19 seasons in the NFL, remarkable in and of itself. Bruce: 14 Pro Bowls. Clay: 4 Pro Bowls. Not discussed nearly as much as other guys, but worthy. |
![]() |
3 (21) | PHIL AND JOE NIEKRO | They get the nod over the Maddux boys here because each has at least 221 career wins, whereas Mike Maddux was 39-37 lifetime. |
![]() |
4 (127) | MAURICE AND HENRI RICHARD | Maurice Richard has a league trophy named for him, and the league waived the three-year waiting period for the HOF when he retired. Henri? Dude won 11 Stanley Cups; only Bill Russell comes close to that many titles in modern professional North American sports. |
![]() |
5 (899) | BOBBY AND DENNIS HULL | The hockey love continues. Bobby: 610 goals, possibly one of the five best players in NHL history. Dennis: less-discussed, but a still dominant 303 career goals. |
| HONORABLE MENTION | |||
| RANK (YESTERDAY) | WHAT | WHY | |
![]() |
18 (144) | DOMINIQUE AND GERALD WILKINS | Dominique was the star and Gerald was more the 'consistent brother,' but between 'em they do have over 38,000 career points, which is pretty impressive. |
![]() |
28 (701) | THE SUTTER BROTHERS | Get the nod here on volume alone: there were six of 'em. It's a nice bar trivia trick to get people to name them all; if you ever find a person who can name all six Sutters and all seven Dwarves, marry them. |
| RISING AND FALLING | ||
| MOVEMENT | WHAT | |
![]() |
| THE SEDIN TWINS (That commercial is hysterical.) |
![]() |
| THE WILLIAMS SISTERS (Probably the greatest sibling combo ever, but we said brothers. Ah, semantics.) |
