EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO READ ABOUT YANKEE STADIUM TODAY

The Yanks closed the Stadium in style.
They're only moving across the street, but from the reactions—the goodbyes (The New York Times, Daily News, Post), the international coverage (Al Jazeera, Agence France-Presse (where Jeter is known as "American Jeter"), Daily Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald), the remembrances (USA Today, Newsday, Associated Press)—you'd think Major League baseball has contracted the Yankees and forced Derek Jeter into retirement.
But with everyone remembering The House that Ruth Built in their own way this weekend, how were you supposed to find the best coverage? After all, you're busy people. That's why we did it for you. Read on:
- Yankee Stadium history from MLB.com: "Only a year after they changed Baseball forever with the purchase of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees made another buy that would forever change the way the game was watched."
- Bloggers have their say:
- A heartfelt goodbye. [Bronx Banter]
- A blog whose tagline is "Because we won't tear down Yankee Stadium." [River Ave. Blues]
- A fan recounts his first visit. [Replacement Level Yankees]
- "Farewell to the Cathedral." [Pinstripe Alley]
- Farewell, 1923-2008. [ The Bronx Block]
- Memories of "spanning time together." [YFSF]
- A Royals fan (okay, full disclosure: me) writes from the Yankee Stadium bleachers. [In Dayton We Trust]
- Yankee Stadium, witness to Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling, Knute Rockne's "Win one for the Gipper" speech, the NFL's "Greatest Game Ever Played," Pelé and Pope Benedict XVI … and one legendary prank.
- Interesting trivia: Yankee Stadium's record crowd of 123,707 was set in 1958 by a Jehovah's Witnesses convention.
- Complex Magazine's blog offers Yankee Stadium's "funniest" moments. Note: there may be some typical stadium profanity in the background.
- Not all folks are joyous: this Daily News columnist rails against ESPN (accusations of hypocrisy) and Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan says Yankee Stadium doesn't need to be torn down (accusations of greed).
- ESPN's tribute page and guestbook.
- A coffee table book: Yankee Stadium: A Tribute.
- Photo slideshows: New York Times (9 pics), USA Today (14 pics), Reuters (43 pics), Yahoo! (167 pics) and SI (28 pics).
- Aaron Boone, Reggie Jackson, Bernie Williams, Don Larson, George Brett, the American League All-Stars, Tony Tarasco and Jeffrey Maier … they're all in this YouTube tribute video, topped off by one of the most famous quotes in sports. (Also see, as Jon Miller put it, "the final inning of the final game." Try not to get chills when Frank Sinatra comes on the PA.)
- It's only appropriate that we leave the last words to one Lawrence Peter Berra—tell it, Yogi: "I won't miss this place. Because it's inside me. Baseball is my life. And this is where I lived it."
