THE MAG.COM PRESENTS:
ALL WORLD POWER RANKINGS

WHEN IT COMES TO ONE-HIT WONDERS, WE'LL GO WITH MARK FIDRYCH
[Ed's note: Not sure what All-World Power Rankings is? Please click here.]
It's National One-Hit Wonder Day. Awesome. Here's a detailed list of one-hit wonders in the most common application of the term, the music industry. You can apply the concept quite easily to sports, and we're just the people to do it. Our senior editor wrote two one-hit wonder specials for VH1 back in the day. "Yea, so-and-so IS still making music!" Depressing. Here we go with the athletic side. Should be noted we missed a ton, because there's just so many (so holler at us with your ideas, will ya?): Michael Chang won a major at 17 and then basically disappeared, for example. We need more space! Wait, isn't this the Internet?
| TOP 5 | |||
| RANK (YESTERDAY) | WHAT | WHY | |
![]() |
1 (68) | MARK FIDRYCH | Dude went 19-9 with a 2.34 ERA in '76, his only complete MLB season. Cue The New York Times Magazine: "Fidrych is more than a fad. He is an experience—existential, romantic. He is almost an act of faith in an age of doubt, a happy display of innocence in a time of cunning." Jeez. Who line edits that stuff? |
![]() |
2 (62) | TIMMY SMITH | Maybe the best performance by a RB in Super Bowl history. But, uh, there's not much else to say. |
![]() |
3 (79) | TATE GEORGE | The definition, inherently, is 'being known for one thing.' George pretty much has the Clemson shot: heck, look at his Wikipedia. Embarrassing. |
![]() |
4 (92) | BUSTER DOUGLAS | Here's the dude's moment in the sun. |
![]() |
5 (87) | FRANCISCO CABRERA | Remember? Resulted in two interesting off-shoots: (1) the Sid Bream slide (epic) and (2) more people need to question Bonds' effort on that play. |
| HONORABLE MENTION | |||
| RANK (YESTERDAY) | WHAT | WHY | |
![]() |
82 (139) | BILL MAZEROSKI | Well, people do talk about him every October. |
![]() |
103 (1,870) | JEFF HOSTETLER | The dude was good in college and not a bad pro overall. But really, he's got that one SB run in most people's eyes. Side note: saw Frank Gifford on Mike Francesca's new show the other day. Coulda sworn he said the Giants looked good at QB "with Hostetler." What the? |
| RISING AND FALLING | ||
| MOVEMENT | WHAT | |
![]() |
| DAVID TYREE (Too soon?) |
![]() |
| DON MAJKOWSKI (Part of the argument here used to be that Favre jacked his job, but now Rodgers is blowing up - yea Lil Wayne! - and we're not deifying Favre as much anymore.) |
